Jade debuted in Mortal Kombat II (1993) as an unplayable secret character, and became a playable character in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (1995). She was created by John Tobias, one of the creators of the Mortal Kombat series, and is typically ranked as the second hottest female Mortal Kombat character of all-time.

Some criticized Jade for being "over sexual." Official store-bought Halloween costumes of Jade was even blasted as being "slutty" and "weird." One critic even listed Jade as a "half-naked skank."
