Update: Please be advised that this is a 2009 article and that 24 has been canceled. Please click here to read the announcement.

When asked if season 8 will be the last for 24 Kiefer Sutherland replied to reporters at Comic-Con by simply stating "I don't know with regards to The Last Season or anything," and then stated that "I really don't. It is the last season that I've been contracted to do 24, but I really don't know."

Kiefer hinted that he's open to season 9 though: "If Howard [Gordon] came to me and say, The way I saw those last scenes play, I have an idea for Season Nine that would be unbelievable, I would have to listen to him for that. I think we're all very away of wanting to protect what we believe is a very strong and important legacy that is 24. All of those things. Again, the choices to do or not to do it have nothing to do with my contract, have everything to do with whether or not an audience still wants to watch it and cares and whether or not we feel we have something to offer."

I understand where Kiefer is coming from. I don't want to see another season 6... if a season 9 means another season 6 then by all means please end the series!

"I think it's gonna be very complicated," Kiefer said." Whether this is our last season or next season's our last season, we certainly know we're on the shorter end of the stick than the longer one."

24 blew through most of the high calibur settings so what's next? What idea could keep the series going for a 9th season?

Without spoiling much of the series past: there's an episode from season 4 where L.A. goes dark and Jack Bauer needs to survive against all odds against a mini-army. We need an entire season like that episode!

An entire season about a major invasion would be totally awesome! Terrorists could invade an entire major city with Jack Bauer in it. I'll leave the rest for you to imagine!

Update: Kiefer Sutherland said that he's still open to filming a ninth season of 24! Click here to read the update!
