Nintendo President: The Wii U Isn't a Tablet Console

Satoru Iwata admitted to the London Evening Standard that Nintendo may have confused consumers into thinking that the Wii U is a tablet-only console.
"Because we put so much emphasis on the controller, there appeared to be some misunderstanding," Iwata said. "We should have made more effort to explain how it works."
Nintendo showcased the Wii U console in their promotional images (as seen below), and trailer, so why the confusion?
