The Best

There are major spoilers for 24 in this article!

24 is an American conspiracy thriller television series starring Kiefer Sutherland as special agent Jack Bauer, produced for the Fox Network and syndicated worldwide. The show is presented in the semblance of real time, with each 24-episode season covering 24 hours in the life of Bauer. First broadcast on November 6, 2001, the show ran for 192 episodes over eight seasons, with the series finale broadcast on May 24, 2010.

Now that 24 has ended for a couple months, I can professionally announce that the fifth season is the series best! In fact, the fifth season of 24 is the best season of any show ever! But that's for a whole other edition of "The Best."

Anyway, before I rant away, let's take a look at some key details for the fifth season of 24 -- but be warned that it contains major spoilers:

Sypnosis (via Fox): "24, surpassing 100 episodes this season, is one of the most innovative, addictive and acclaimed dramas on television. In its first four seasons, the suspenseful series has been nominated for a total of 39 Emmys, including four each for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Kiefer Sutherland. 24 has also received nine Golden Globe nominations and was honored with awards for Best Television Series – Drama and Sutherland’s Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama.

"Created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran, 24 retains its unpredictable and unique format in the fifth season. Each episode covers one hour of real time and the season's entire story takes place in one heart-stopping day, with viewers following the characters as they experience an unforgettable day while facing extraordinary circumstances.

"In season four of 24, JACK BAUER (Sutherland) led Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU) operatives through a thrilling day as they shielded the country from nuclear disasters that would have killed millions of people and changed the world forever.

"Season five started 18 months later with the series’ most shocking season premiere, which left viewers gasping when President Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) was assassinated and Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard), Michelle Dessler (Reiko Aylesworth) and CHLOE O’BRIAN (Mary Lynn Rajskub) became targets for knowing Jack Bauer was alive.

"His cover blown and now pinned to the president’s assassination, Bauer was once again on the run. He avoided authorities to follow leads to an airport hostage situation where Russian extremists would leverage innocent lives against the will of PRESIDENT LOGAN (Gregory Itzin) and his signing of a historic arms treaty with Russian President YURI SUVAROV (Nick Jameson). As the significant signing proceeded, Bauer joined key CTU operative CURTIS MANNING (Roger Cross) to quell the terrorists’ airport attack. Meanwhile, First Lady MARTHA LOGAN (Jean Smart) claimed to uncover evidence of a larger threat, and as a result, Presidential advisor and conspirator WALT CUMMINGS (John Allen Nelson) unraveled.

"Bauer, ordered back to CTU by commanders BILL BUCHANAN (James Morrison) and newcomer LYNN McGILL (Sean Astin), will be reunited with EDGAR STILES (Louis Lombardi) and lost love AUDREY RAINES (Kim Raver) as the terror threat intensifies.

"24, created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran, is a production of Real Time Productions and Imagine Television in association with 20th Century Fox Television. Brian Grazer, Joel Surnow, Robert Cochran, Howard Gordon and Evan Katz are the executive producers. Kiefer Sutherland is a co-executive producer."

Trailer (episodes 1-4):

Now that you're refreshed about this season, I can start my rant!

Every season (including season 6) of 24 is awesome, but I choose season 5 because it's flawless! Kiefer Sutherland (Jack Bauer) did his best acting in season 5! In addition to Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) kicking a**, what really made the season was that sneaky a**hole President Charles Logan (Gregory Itzin)! I admit to thinking that President Logan was a flaw in season 4 -- but boy was I wrong!

I remember one of the season 5 premiere trailers teasing a major shocker in the first 5 minutes... but I didn't expect President David Palmer getting assassinated! President Palmer will forever be known as 24's best President, but President Logan ended up being the most interesting President to watch! The guy is a cunning coward. It was hilarious when Jack got his hands on the sucker!

The season 5 premiere trailer also teased another major shocker that resulted in one of the other major characters going berserk: The death of Michelle Dessler (Reiko Aylesworth). Man Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard) ended up being totally f***** after that event as seen here (from season 7):

That's perhaps one of the saddest events in the series history...

On a lighter note, one of my favorite episodes from the fifth season is "Day 5: 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m." Man that episode featured a killer lockdown in which CTU was hit with a canister of nerve gas. The whole lockdown process was pretty slick, but lead to another damn depressing event: the death of fan favorite innocent CTU analyst Edgar Stiles (Louis Lombardi). 55 other people died at the event. Normally this amount of deaths calls of a "Jump the Shark" event -- but with the way 24 has been since its first season, major deaths is a normal thing on the show.

I enjoyed watching Wayne Palmer's (President David Palmer's brother) scenes in which he helps Jack find the people who assassinated his brother, and Michelle Dessler. I must have been in state of shock when I found out that President Logan was behind all of the attacks! So what does Jack Do? Take matters into his own hands by infiltrating the Secret Service to get to President Logan! Although it seemed like Jack failed in his mission to record President Logan confessing his crimes -- he had placed a microtransmitter on the President that later recorded an ironic event. It's a shame that Jack was pretty much immediately captured by the Chinese (the bad blood started in season 4) and didn't get to witness the fall of President Logan... but that event needed to be done to make season 5 the series best!
