The Pokémon Company International has brought back one of the most recognizable modern Pokémon cards with a new printing of the 2023 Scarlet & Violet Paldea Evolved Illustration Rare 203/193 Magikarp in the 2026 Mega Evolution 30th Celebration set.
And now, all eyes are on the original.
The Paldea Evolved Magikarp has become one of the most desirable modern Illustration Rares, thanks in large part to Shinji Kanda's distinctive artwork. But with a new version now available at a significantly lower price, the market may be about to face an interesting test.
Near Mint copies of the original Paldea Evolved Magikarp have recently been trading in the neighborhood of $350-$375, depending on the marketplace and the individual sale.
The new 30th Celebration version, meanwhile, has entered the market at a considerably lower price of $135.
One of the biggest questions is whether people who want the Magikarp primarily for gameplay will continue paying several hundred dollars for the original.
For a collector, paying a premium for the original Paldea Evolved version can make sense. It has a cleaner presentation that showcases the artwork without the anniversary branding.
For a player, however, the equation is different. The newer version provides the same gameplay function, at a much lower cost. That distinction could put pressure on the original.
A player who needs multiple copies of a card has little incentive to spend $350 or more per copy if a newer version can be purchased for a fraction of that price.
In other words, the new Magikarp could separate the market into two distinct groups: Players may gravitate toward the cheaper printing, while collectors may continue to seek the original.
