Mewtwo uses Reflective Barrier.
I came across an ignorant post claiming that the market value of the 2023 Pokémon Trading Card Game Scarlet & Violet Promo 052 Mewtwo is plummeting because there are copies listed for under $22.
The post went on to predict that this is the beginning of a market reset and that we won’t see this card return to its current $45 market value for a long time.
The problem is, the person making this claim apparently didn’t bother to look at the condition of the cards listed below $45. Most of those copies are listed as “damaged.”
That’s an important distinction when evaluating a card’s market value. A handful of heavily damaged copies selling for or being listed at less than $22 doesn’t necessarily indicate that the market value of the card itself has collapsed.
That doesn’t mean the Mewtwo can’t drop in value in the near future. Markets change, and prices can certainly move lower. But based on the available listings, there isn’t enough evidence to claim that the market value has already reset.
As of now, the market value has remained relatively steady since March of this year. Looking at asking prices without taking condition into account can create a very misleading picture of what’s actually happening in the market.
Another thing to note is this card has a very large graded population. PSA's population is now around 40,500 copies, including more than 8,300 PSA 10s. That's evidence of substantial collector/grading interest.
PSA currently estimates the market value of a GEM MT 10 at approximately $572 to $704, with a high level of confidence. A valuation range at this level, combined with strong grading and collector demand, indicates that the card continues to have meaningful market interest.
While no price range guarantees future performance, cards that maintain substantial premiums in top grades and consistent collector demand have demonstrated stronger market resilience than cards with little grading or collector interest.
