The line to get a free 2026 Pokémon Trading Card Game Mega Evolution 30th Celebration Rare Cosmos Holo 063/128 Mewtwo (“What’s Your Favorite” stamped) was absolutely insane.
Scalpers started lining up as early as 11 PM the night before, and by the time the card was released at noon on Sunday, the line had stretched roughly a tenth of a mile.
What made it even more ridiculous was seeing so many people bring their babies and young children out in the pouring rain just to wait in line for a free trading card. It was honestly one of the most absurd things I’ve ever seen surrounding an entertainment-related event.
Mewtwo is my favorite Pokémon, and I really wanted the card, but there’s no way I was going to stand in line for more than 24 hours to get it. I had work that needed to be done.
I honestly think the children should have been given an opportunity to simply walk into the store at noon and receive the card without having to endure a wait in the rain. It was supposed to be a fun celebration, not an endurance test.
The card is currently selling for around $20 on a popular auction website. In other words, after spending 13 hours standing in line, these scalpers effectively made about $1.54 an hour.
