Mouse ☑︎.![]()
Web browser ☐.
Fans are assuming that because the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console features a mouse, this device will feature an official web browser. Let's take a look at a few facts:
-
None of the screenshots and trailers from Nintendo show a web browser.
-
It would be costly to maintain the security of a web browser. This isn't cost-effective considering hardly anyone would use it.
-
Web browsers are common entry points for malware, phishing, exploits, homebrew, and piracy.
-
The Nintendo Wii U, which was released in 2012, is the last console from this manufacturer to feature an official web browser.
Considering Nintendo prioritized a controlled ecosystem on their first Switch to prevent unpredictable content or distractions, I doubt they will add a web browser on Switch 2.
The last time I frequently used a web browser on a video system was on the Nintendo 3DS, but that's only because I didn't own a smartphone. I used this system to look up tips for PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii games. It was horrendously sluggish. I must have collectively listened to the loading sound effects for days.
