Netflix's value is put to the test.
I've always felt that I received a decent amount of value from Netflix's Steaming service. I figured that it would be fun to put that suspicion to the test by estimating the value of each movie or show that I watched in July 2014.
To estimate the value of each stream, I divided the cost of the physical version (Blu-ray or DVD) of each movie or show by the estimated amount of times I would watch that release in the next 20 years.

Movie/Show
|
Estimated Runtime
|
Value of Stream
|
| American Psycho | 103 minutes | $0.83 |
| Insidious: Chapter 2 | 106 minutes | $5.50 |
| Star Trek Into Darkness | 132 minutes | $1.00 |
| Terminator 2: Judgment Day | 152 minutes | $0.50 |
| The Last Stand | 107 minutes | $2.99 |
| The Silence of the Lambs | 119 minutes | $2.42 |
| The X-Files: Season 8 | 930 minutes | $4.00 |
| The X-Files: Season 9 | 882 minutes | $4.00 |
I estimated that the total value of the movies and shows that I watched on Netflix in July 2014 was $21.24. Here's an interesting breakdown of that value:
-
The movies that I watched had a total value of $13.24.
-
The average value each movie that I watched was approximately $2.21.
-
The total runtime of the movies that I watched is 719 minutes (11 hours 59 minutes).
-
The shows that I watched had a total value of $8.
-
The average value of each season that I watched was $4.
-
The total runtime of the shows that I watched is 1,812 minutes (30 hours 12 minutes).
-
I paid approximately $0.27 for each hour of programming.
