How much higher can prices possibly climb?![]()
2.5-inch SATA SSDs have gone up in price recently, particularly in late 2025. Check out these absurd prices for a few of the recently listed drives:
-
960 GB - $475.15 ($0.50 per GB).
-
200 GB - $149.99 ($0.75 per GB).
-
240 GB - $99.99 ($0.42 per GB).
-
240 GB - $114.99 ($0.48 per GB).
-
240 GB - $317.32 ($1.32 per GB).
-
480 GB - $225.65 ($0.47 per GB).
-
480 GB - $332.65 ($0.69 per GB).
-
960 GB - $265.00 ($0.28 per GB).
-
1.92 TB - $757.11 ($0.39 per GB).
Asking $1.32 per GB is next-level price gouging. It wasn't long ago when I paid $18 for 240 GB 2.5-inch SATA SSDs ($0.08 per GB)!
I'm even having trouble sourcing 128 GB drives that hardly anyone wanted in the past. At this rate, old 64 GB drives will most likely become scarce and expensive.
At this rate, I'll need to go back to 3.5-inch HDDs for my OS and programs. It's been several years since I've used this technology for anything beyond external backups, but it might be my only choice for budget builds.
Amazon.com currently has a Western Digital 1 TB HDD listed for $59.99 ($0.06 per GB), and a Western Digital 2 TB HDD listed for $69.99 ($0.04 per GB).
