The holiday roller coaster has only just started climbing.
October, my favorite month of the year, has come to an end. And honestly, I may have gone a little overboard with the Halloween decorations this year. Somewhere along the way, my home went from feeling festive and spooky to looking like a full-blown haunted mansion.
Then there are the candy jars. They're everywhere. Kitchen counter, coffee table, entryway, desk. I counted at least five before I stopped counting. Every jar is tempting, and taking up space.
So I'm doing something about it, and not only for the sake of my sanity. Clearing out the clutter now means I can actually enjoy the holidays ahead instead of wading through them.
Because the holidays are busy enough. Between the cooking, the gatherings, the shopping, and everything else, the last thing I want to do is place my Christmas tree next to the spider web decorations. A calm, tidy home makes everything feel more manageable and a lot more cozy.
There's also something satisfying about starting fresh. Closing the door on one season, clearing the slate, and welcoming the next one with intention feels like a small gift to myself.
And just like that, the transition begins. The pumpkins, ghosts, and skeletons are slowly making their way back into storage, clearing the way for Christmas lights, wreaths, and all the little touches that make this time of year feel so special.
I’m not naive enough to think that boxing up a few decorations will make life any less hectic. If anything, we’re just getting started. November has its own rhythm, and before we know it, Thanksgiving will arrive, followed by the whirlwind of December and New Year's. The calendar fills up fast, the to-do lists keep growing, and somehow the days seem to move a little quicker.
That’s why I’m trying to get ahead of the chaos now, one small corner at a time. I’m not chasing perfection or a picture-perfect home. I just want a space that feels peaceful, welcoming, and ready for whatever the coming weeks bring.
Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the holidays are far more enjoyable when I’m not buried under everything I still need to do. A little preparation now can make a world of difference later.
So here’s to packing away Halloween, making room for what’s next, and embracing the beautiful, messy, sometimes exhausting stretch of the year ahead. The roller coaster has only just left the station, and by getting my home (and myself) ready now, I’m hoping to enjoy the ride a little more.
