It was February 13, 2001. The Kimo Clan invited the Grigoriy Clan to preview the upcoming "May Day" at their local school before they head off to Banyan Drive.

The school’s Kumu hula has been working closely with students to prepare for their upcoming performance on May 1, sharing the traditions and spirit of Hawaiian hula along the way.

Students stood in rows immediately. They were used to this. With the annual May Day performance only months away, hula practice happened every Tuesday and Thursday.

The kumu hula demonstrated hand motions, footwork, and posture. The movements represent elements from nature like ocean waves, wind, rain, flowers, or animals, and help tell the story of a chant or song.

Although the students are still in the early stages of their hula training, the Grigoriy Clan was amazed by the passion and promise shown by every student.

Respect for and connection to the land are foundational to hula. This resonated with the Grigoriy Clan, as Russian cultural traditions also view nature as part of the divine order.

In many Russian communities, people bless their fields as a way of honoring the "Motherland" and expressing reverence for the land that sustains them.

As a gesture of aloha, the Kimo Clan presented each member of the Grigoriy Clan with a seashell lei bracelet, tokens of friendship and family that will be deeply cherished.

The Grigoriy Clan sets out for Banyan Drive, a landmark their human roommates back in Russia frequently saw featured in Hawaii magazines.

"Braddahs, get one secret lava rock tunnel inside da bushes right across da fire station. Can sneak safely across da street through there. Best part, da predators too chunky fo’ fit inside. Jus’ no go down dea when stay raining," Ikaika shared.

It was relatively easy to move past the businesses along the route since most were contractor sites, and the airport fence line was heavily overgrown.

Thermal optics picked up a lone feral cat stalking myna birds. The distraction allowed the mice to slip past the threat undetected without deploying deterrents or weapons.

They concealed themselves in the trees while Technician Grigoriy deployed an advanced LiDAR drone to generate a 3D map of the hidden lava rock tunnel. The scan confirmed the route was clear.

The tunnel brought them across the street near a brackish pond. The swimmers could be heard screaming in agony.

Technician Grigoriy was struck by how dramatically cooler sections of this pond were compared to the nearby body of water. Some parts were over ten degrees cooler.

"Russians would love this pond," said Observer Grigoriy.

Above Banyan Drive, the trees became a playground for the mice. Thick branches stretched across the road like a bridge. Vines hung low enough for the mice to swing between trunks.

Below them, a convertible rolled past slowly, tourists unaware that armed mice were conducting a mission overhead.

They stopped to watch a group of humans searching for a golf ball in the rough while chickens wandered through the fairway like tiny feathered golf officials.

By the hotels, two security guards were locked in a spirited debate about the finest malassada recipe. The argument was still underway when the mice arrived at Liliʻuokalani Gardens, a serene Japanese-style garden where the land, ocean, and community meet as one.

The gardens smelled of salt air and damp pine bark. Beneath the arched bridges, koi drifted like floating lanterns. To the mice, they looked like mysterious river dragons.

Sea turtles drifted through the calm water as gentle waves hissed against the black-rock shore. Nearby, retired fishermen sat beneath the trees, trading stories from fifty years ago. Tales of rough seas, giant catches, and nights guided only by the moon and stars.

The mice rested at the coolest place in town. Between the icy drinks and the refreshing air, it felt a little like being back in Russia again.

They settled into a safe place to rest, knowing the next part of their journey could only begin after nightfall.
